Around 600,000 doctor hours have been affected by the doctors strike in the UK. This is the biggest doctors strike since 1975.

350,000 health workers have been out of work as a result of the strike, with specialist doctors, so-called “junior doctors”, striking for higher wages, reports Sky News.

NHS patients have been warned that many scheduled appointments involving these doctors may be impacted. Junior doctors make up about half of the doctors in the NHS.

– We are now in the eighth month of the strike in the NHS, and our staff are continuing to work hard to provide the best possible care to patients given the circumstances, wrote NHS England in a press release.

The NHS is asking patients who urgently need help to call 911 and others to call NHS111, who can help direct them to the right provider.

The reason for the strike is that junior doctors are at the same salary level as in 2008 and 2009, which must be regulated to match general prices and current salary levels.

Apart from a brief dispute in 2012 over a doctors pension agreement, this was the largest prolonged strike among doctors since 1975.
