However, the UK government will not privatize broadcaster Channel 4, as has been planned.

– After reviewing the reasons for the project and talking with the relevant sector, I came to the conclusion that Channel 4 should not be sold, said the Minister of Culture Michelle Donnelan.

Channel 4 is owned by the UK government but is ad funded and does not receive public funding. In April 2022, the government proposed selling the broadcaster, which drew sharp criticism from across the political spectrum.

Instead, broadcasters will be given greater commercial flexibility to secure the future.

Channel 4 was created in the 1980s to provide a clear alternative to the BBC and ITV. The channel has a unique model of not producing any programming itself, leading to an active sector of independent broadcasters in the UK.

Now the no-in-house production requirement will be reduced, and Channel 4 will have greater opportunities to produce and monetize its own content. At the same time, these changes must be made in consultation with the independent production sector.
