– Russian atrocities continue. Thise is unacceptable. Moreover, not from members of the Security Council.
This was conveyed by Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin in a meeting between Japan and Finland today.
The crisis in Ukraine has motivated Finland and neighboring Sweden, both of which have faced Russian aggression in the past, to consider applying for NATO membership.
Ahead of his first private summit with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Marin said at an event in Tokyo that his country would soon make a decision to apply for NATO membership.
He also said that if Finland now took a historic step into NATO, it would secure its citizens.
– Follow carefully
Russian President Vladimir Putin has long stated that he is critical of NATO. He is concerned about national security, and does not want NATO to take a new member state bordering Russia.
Warn Finland: – Will respond
The Kremlin said on Wednesday it was following developments.
“We are closely monitoring everything that could affect the NATO configuration near Russia’s borders,” the Kremlin said according to Reuters.
