Vinskolen: Danish detective hunt

The task was more demanding than expected: How to find good wine deals on Danish store shelves? This is the flavor I hope I find there.

Light as a dot, I thought of the task. The summer house we visit every year is located in a sleepy Danish fishing village. At least so, before a string of notorious crimes was made from that place.

Now I feel a bit like a detective myself, as I walk lightly into Superbrugsen. The amount of product is bigger than I expected. However, it was tighter than I expected.

Giants dominate.

Italy, France and Spain have those shelves. Wine-producing countries such as Austria, England and Portugal are almost non-existent. Don’t be so tight now, I thought and looked further. Among the giants, there are also giants available. International company. Powerful constellation. World famous brand. Wine with wide distribution and large production.

Now I have no romantic opinion that small is always good in the wine world. Capital is often synonymous with choice, be it grapes, professionals or equipment. But something is also often missing in these giga productions.

Antique variety. Uniqueness of grapes. Growing place. When such a large order is delayed, one cannot make a mistake. The result is a product that is predictable and often has a slightly dense, forgettable, and subtle flavor.
