Weather chaos: Many injured

About 100 guests on a British cruise ship were injured when the ship ran into a storm in Spain’s northern Bay of Biscay on Tuesday.

The Spirit of Discovery cruise ship was on a 14-day voyage to the Canary Islands when it was hit by bad weather in the Bay of Biscay last weekend.

It is understood that the ship had to cancel a visit to Las Palmas due to the storm and instead headed to Spain’s La Coruña when the port was closed due to weather conditions.

The crew decided to sail back to England when the ship’s propulsion system activated in bad weather, causing the ship to veer sharply to the left and suddenly come to a complete stop.

This meant 100 of the approximately 1,000 passengers were injured, most of whom suffered minor injuries. However, five people had to be treated for more serious injuries on the ship, according to the company Saga Cruises, which owns the ship.

The cruise ship returned to port in the English city of Portsmouth on Monday evening, but Saga Cruises has not confirmed whether there were any injuries requiring further medical treatment on land.

– The ship was safe all the time, however due to the storm some guests were injured. They received immediate medical treatment on board, a statement said.
