What is a vote of no confidence in the UK? – DW – 06/06/2022

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson faces a vote of no confidence from his Conservative Party this Monday (6/6/2022), from there he emerged victoriousbut very damaged.

Johnson has faced accusations for months of partying at his home and office, while other countries implemented strict lockdown restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic. The prime minister apologized to the parties but insisted he did not intentionally break his own government’s rules. An official report said the parties represented a “failure of leadership” in the prime minister’s office.

How could this happen?

A vote of no confidence can be implemented if 15 per cent of Conservative MPs write to the chair of the influential 1922 Committee, the parliamentary group of all Conservative MPs.

The party currently has 359 MPs, meaning 54 must submit papers. Graham Brady, chairman of the committee, announced on Monday that the threshold had been crossed.

How many votes does he need?

Several senior members of his cabinet pledged their support, including Foreign Secretary Liz Truss. Michael Gove also expressed his support for Johnson. In the end, 211 Tory MPs supported them. A more than sufficient amount, as 180 was enough for him.

What happens during a vote of no confidence?

All Conservative MPs can vote for or against the remaining leader. Johnson needed a simple majority to win, and he got it.

And now he’s won, what?

If he wins, Johnson remains in office and gains immunity that protects him from a formal vote of no confidence for one year. However, if he fails to win convincingly, he could decide to resign as party chairman.

What would happen if he lost?

If he loses the majority, Johnson will have to resign and be barred from standing at the next election. This process could take up to six weeks, during which time Johnson must serve as acting prime minister until his successor takes office. General elections will not happen automatically. (rr/dzc)
