Zanzibar: – Investigating the mass death of crabs

The crabs in question are swimming crabs, and they have been stranded on the island’s shores since September 28, according to local authorities.

They were particularly stranded in the western cities of Mtoni, Mizingani and Forodhani.

– Similar reports of mass swimming crab deaths have also been reported in island nations in the western Indian Ocean, such as the Seychelles, said Zanzibar nature conservation authority ZEMA director Sheha Mjaja Juma.

That’s what the Tanzanian newspaper wrote Townspeople.

However, local authorities advised residents and fishermen not to worry because of the pollution.

based on BBC Preliminary investigations suggest that the crab deaths were caused by climate change, in the form of sudden changes in sea temperature.

But authorities have launched an investigation to get to the bottom of the cause.

– Some living things such as swimming crabs cannot withstand sudden changes in ocean temperature, so they die and become stranded, Tanzanian marine biologist Salum Soud told the BBC.

– Seawater has a temperature layer, and waves force the water up. This can lead to low oxygen levels at the depths where the crabs lie, and can lead to their death, he added.

Photographs released by Tanzania’s Ministry of Fisheries show a large number of crabs that were stranded recently.
