Davis Cup: Time flies; greatness, never | Columnist | sport

Ecuador is not a favorite at all. This is a great truth. But… didn’t something similar happen to us with England at Wimbledon in 2000?

Madrid

35 years ago I broadcast my first Davis Cup in Essen (Germany) on the radio Atalaya and I reported it for EL UNIVERSO. He is not yet 18 years old, but with lex Russel Miranda we fulfill the mission entrusted to us. Andrés Gómez and Raúl Viver play for Ecuador; the captain is Ricardo Ycaza. For Germany, nothing more and nothing less than the equally formidable Boris Becker and Eric Jelen. We fell without any mitigating factors in the synthetic field very quickly which benefited the locals.

Mario Canessa Oneto and Miguel Martín Ycaza (+) broadcast on Caravan and they watched all the anecdotes from that unforgettable series.

Three and a half decades later, I had to go to Madrid on the same plane as Andrés, who is now the father of our number one racket, Emilio Gomez Estrada, and as a living legend of world tennis.

Now Raúl Viver is Davis Cup captain and Luis Adrián Morejón (former national tennis player) has not only become a successful entrepreneur of international sporting events, but in the last fifteen years he has broadcast series for Atalaya around the world where it is Ecuador’s turn to play.

On the Spanish side, Sergi Bruguera Catalan is also a world tennis monster and is now their Davis Cup captain. He has the tough task of repeating the title he won in 2019, but now without the injured Rafael Nadal. For this he has a strong team with young Alcaraz and Carreño Busta, who, however, cannot be compared with the very strong Russia of Daniil Medvédev (number two in the ATP rankings) and Andrey Rublev (five).

Friday and Saturday, at the Madrid Arena, starting at 04:00 (Ecuadorian time), we will report live, step by step, on our prized tennis player cup events against Iberia and Russia.

We’re not favourites at all. This is a great truth. But… didn’t something similar happen to us with England at Wimbledon in 2000? All the chronicles we wrote for THE UNIVERSE at Wimbledon are there for posterity.

Ecuador is, along with Argentina, one of the most successful Latin American and Caribbean countries in the Davis Cup. That’s why we didn’t hesitate to come to Madrid!

Out of results, today we are in the elite or VIP group of international tennis. (OR)
