Ends the search for the missing crew

American Kerry O’Brien, Frank O’Brien and William Gross allegedly left the port in the Mexican coastal city of Mazatlán on April 4 at 09:30 local time, wrote CNN.

They were due to arrive in Cabo San Lucas two days later to stock up on supplies for the journey further up the coast to San Diego, USA.

According to the Mexican Navy, they never showed up.

Now the Mexican authorities have decided to end the search in the Gulf of California. It reports NBC News Thursday.

– Unfortunately, we have not found any traces of the three Americans. We also don’t know anything about where they are or what has happened, said Gregory Higgings of the US Coast Guard in a statement.

According to the press release, the Coast Guard has spent a total of 281 hours searching an area larger than the state of California.

– We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of William Gross, Kerry O’Brien and Frank O’Brien.

The Gulf of California is the bay of the Pacific Ocean, between the Baja California (Lower California) peninsula and the Mexican mainland. The bay is 1,130 kilometers long and between 80 and 240 kilometers wide. It reaches a depth of about 3,300 meters in the mouth area, and is shallower on the inside, according to Huge Norwegian encyclopedia.

Never showed up

The sailboat The Ocean Bound, which is a 44-foot LaFitte, was last seen leaving Mazatlán in early April. Since then, no one has observed the ship or heard from the crew.

– It’s never recorded that they arrived in Cabo San Lucas. Their whereabouts were also not reported, someone said pers conference April 14th.

Additionally, it is said that all marinas in the Mexican state of Baja California have been contacted, but none have seen the 44-foot-long sailboat.

William Gross’ daughter Melissa Spicuzza spoke NBC San Diego that his father was invited by Kerry and Frank O’Brian. Gross would have more than 50 years of seafaring experience.

– I just want my dad back. I want all three of them to sail safely to port and say ‘what’s going on, guys?'” he told the news site.

An urgent message was said to have been sent over the ship’s VHF radio, asking everyone at sea to search for the three missing men and the ship.

According to American media, the three Americans should have had decades of experience at sea. Sailboats are described as “old sturdy ships”.

– When they started their journey, we knew that the weather conditions were not optimal. But there are several sailboats in the sea at the same time. Wind strength was potentially more than 15 meters per second, and waves between four and six meters high, Greg Higgins, coordinator for the US Coast Guard, told CNN.
