Foreign direct investment in Mexico grew 30% in the first nine months of 2023

Foreign direct investment (FDI) that Mexico received from January to September 2023 amounted to 32.926 million dollars (mdd), the Ministry of Economy reported on Wednesday with preliminary figures.

The amount raised was 30% higher than the total registered in the first nine months of 2022, when an influx of $25.272 million was recorded.

The reported number is the new maximum in history since records were kept, according to the agency.

The government determined that the reference for investment flows between January and September 2022 does not take into account the extraordinary amounts resulting from the merger of the Televisa-Univisión company and the restructuring of the Aeroméxico company”, operations which amounted to 6,875 million dollars, that is, If these transactions are taken into account, the FDI in the reference period last year was 32.147 million dollars.

FDI in the third quarter of this year came from 2,539 Mexican companies with foreign capital participation and 4,08 trust contracts, in addition to one foreign legal entity.

76% of this foreign investment represents profits that are not returned to the country of origin; 16% were loans and payments between companies within the corporate group and 8% were new investments in Mexico.

FDI behavior in the third quarter of 2023 “is the result of the confidence of foreign investors due to the favorable business environment and economic stability stemming from the economic and industrial policies promoted by the Mexican Government,” SE said in a statement.

The US remains Mexico’s main partner

In the first nine months of 2023, the United States remains Mexico’s top trading partner, followed by Spain, Germany, Argentina, Japan, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France and Switzerland.

SE also reported that 58% of the FDI received in this period was located in the country’s five states, with Mexico City being the largest gainer, with 32% of total investment, equivalent to 10,550 million dollars, followed by Nuevo León, Sonora , Chihuahua and the State of Mexico.

Based on the manufacturing subsector in Mexico, investments made in the transportation equipment, metals, beverage and tobacco, chemicals, electrical equipment and computer equipment industries stand out.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador stated this Thursday that the FDI received in the first three quarters of 2023 was a “record”.

“This is one of the most interesting countries in the world, we are the main trading partner of the United States, foreign investment data was just released, it was a record in the third quarter, in just nine months 32,926 million dollars, a record,” the President said in a press conference daily.
