The US wants to develop Sola airport, especially so it can be refueled in a better way, said the country’s embassy in Norway.

Jillian Bonnardeaux, communications adviser at the US Embassy, told Stavanger Aftenblad this.

– We are still working with Norway on the plan, but we hope that Sola will play an important role in enhancing our cooperation in the air domain together with Rygge airbase, said Bonnardeaux.

– We specifically wanted to develop Sola to better support recharge operations, explained the communications adviser.

Norway’s defense cooperation agreement with the US covers Rygge, Evenes, Ramsund and Sola.

Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram (Sp) told Aftenbladet that he was not currently aware of any concrete project discussions on Sola.

– It is the US itself that makes judgments dependent on its own process. It has now been confirmed that NOK 2 billion will be invested in the acceptance and better setup of fighters in Rygge. This is a very big and positive thing for Norway, he said.

For Sola, Evenes, and Ramsund, he had “nothing new to report”.
