Australian TV star Rolf Harris, 93, convicted of assault, has died.

Harris was for years a familiar face on family programming on British television, before he was convicted of serial abuse in 2014.

– We confirm that Rolf Harris has died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, and he is now buried. They ask that their privacy be respected. No further comment will be made, the family said in a statement.

He was convicted of several assaults from 1968 to 1986. The court heard that he had used his celebrity status to exploit 12 young girls.

The youngest victim was in his early teens. One of the victims was a friend of his daughter, wrote the BBC.

– You don’t show any remorse for your actions. Your reputation is ruined, but you have no one to blame but yourself, the judge said after the trial.

Before he was convicted as an offender, Harris was a popular TV face.

He works with children’s television, and is in charge of programs about wildlife and the arts. In addition, he also has a career as a music artist.

In 2005, he himself painted a portrait of Queen Elizabeth, for her 80th birthday.
