Ukraine.- Britain stressed the need to reduce dependence on gas and oil from Russia

MADRID, March 8 (EUROPA PRESS) –

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday stressed the need to reduce dependence on gas and oil from Russia, in the context of the conflict sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Johnson has received his Hungarian counterpart, Viktor Orbán, in a meeting whose axis has exacerbated the situation in Ukraine, where both leaders have condemned Russia’s “heinous” actions in the country and have agreed on the need for Russia’s action. President Vladimir Putin stopped this “barbaric” campaign.

Britain’s ‘prime minister’ has discussed with Orbán London about plans to tighten sanctions on Russia and take these steps more quickly, after which he told him he believed it was “key” for Britain and Hungary to work together to find ways to reduce dependence on gas and oil from Russia.

Likewise, the two have stressed that Russia’s “destabilizing” actions in Europe must be resisted, with Britain and Hungary having to investigate the area of cyber resilience, according to a statement issued by Johnson’s office.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told Europe on Tuesday that it was “important” to stop relying on energy imported from Russia, especially in light of the war in Ukraine.

In this context, the United States Government would ban imports of oil and gas from Russia in retaliation for the military attack it launched on Ukraine, a move Washington had been anticipating for several days and for now will not be reflected in the Union. United, divided on this.

This information comes after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Monday recognized the importance of Russia’s energy supply to Europe, while the international community is considering expanding the sanctions imposed on Moscow in this regard. This is one of the reasons why energy has been left out of the battery of sanctions imposed by Europe.
