Vladimir Putin and Russia warn the US against a nuclear weapons attack – Dagsavisen

Last week it emerged that the US Air Force was planning to build a dormitory at the RAF Lakenheath military air base in Suffolk, for personnel who will allegedly work on nuclear weapons, wrote Guard.

The newspaper claims that this could indicate that US nuclear weapons are likely to return to British soil for the first time in more than 15 years. Media like Daily Mail And Bloomberg have also mentioned the issue.

This news, among other things, caused the Russian authorities to react.

Warning from Putin and co.

Marija Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, warned the US against moving nuclear weapons to the British Isles.

– If this step is taken, we will see it as an escalation, he said, according to The Guardian.

He added that these developments would “force Russia to take countermeasures to protect the security interests of our country and our allies.”

US authorities have not commented on whether they plan to store nuclear weapons at Lakenheath.

Russia itself is deploying nuclear weapons

Russia announced in June that it planned to transfer nuclear weapons to Belarus, which borders Russia and Ukraine. In this case, it would be the first time since the fall of the Soviet Union that the country has provided nuclear weapons to its allies, writes The Guardian.

Matt Korda, a senior researcher at the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), who first discovered the US budget item at the Lakenheath base, believes it proves Russia’s double standards.

– While the potential return of American nuclear weapons to British soil is certainly cause for concern, it is a bit odd that this is coming from a government that has spent the last year embarking on exactly the same thing as Belarus, he told the newspaper.
