That’s why “Barbie Girl” is on the charts again

Daqua released their third single “Barbie Girl” in the spring of 1997, it didn’t take long before it topped the charts at home. But it stands out from the group’s previous songs because it reaches far beyond national borders.

The Tønsberg girl Lene Nystrøm along with René Dif, Søren Nystrøm Rasted and Claus Noreen took first place on the charts worldwide, and in the UK it was crowned for four consecutive weeks.

With the song, Aqua has become a sensation and something for the history books.

As of 2022, the song’s music video has reached one billion views on YouTube and remains one best selling single of all time.

When it became clear that a “Barbie” movie would be made with Hollywood favorites Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, fans were outraged. Hopes were high that the legendary pop song would be a part of the film, but they were not met at first.

It shouldn’t be in the movie

Manager of Aqua-Lene, Ulrich Møller-Jørgensen told Variety that the song was not will be in the upcoming Barbie movie which premieres on July 21.

– The song will not be used in the film, he said clearly, much to the disappointment of the fans.

Rotating stone wrote that Margot Robbie, the main character herself, went to director Greta Gerwig and requested that the song be included in the film.

– I said to Greta “how are we going to put this song together?” We couldn’t make a Barbie movie and not include a nod to Aqua’s Barbie Girl. It must be included, must said Robby.

And the Barbie actress reportedly got her way.

In May, fan frustration was dispelled, and production announced that Barbie Girl would be a part of the film.

– We are so excited to finally share with you that Barbie Girl is (of course) going to be a part of the Barbie movie!!!

Aqua wrote it himself on his official Instagram account along with a promotional photo of the film.

Jump to the charts

However, it turned out to be a great choice, as the song recently hit the charts. It comes a full 25 years after the song topped the charts around the world.

In the new version of “Barbie World”, Nicky Minaj and Ice Spice provide vocals, and at the time of writing, the song has less than 25 million streams on Spotify. In comparison, the original version has been streamed 374 million times.

This isn’t the first time movies and television programs have given decades-old songs a fresh boost. KK has previously written about ’80s icon Kate Bush, whose sudden comeback to the top of the charts last year here:
