Britain’s refugee policy is a hot topic, and British authorities have said they plan to send migrants and refugees who cross the English Channel illegally abroad.
However, Bibby Stockholm’s new floating asylum reception center has been purchased as part of Home Affairs Minister Suella Braverman’s efforts to cut housing costs for asylum seekers.
The flying asylum reception center was supposed to accommodate 220 people, but British authorities have decided that they will move 500 asylum seekers there and replace the single beds with bunk beds instead.
Work is also underway to provide accommodation in decommissioned military buildings, and the aim is for them to house another 3,000 people there by autumn, according to the Interior Ministry.
Both local and some human rights groups criticized the government’s plan to accept floating asylum.
